An Overview Of Wisdom Tooth Surgery

Wisdom tooth surgery is called for when there are complications in the way these final molars have positioned themselves under the gums. If the wisdom teeth are unable to cut through the gums they become impacted, and this may lead infections, and damage to nearby teeth.

During wisdom tooth surgery, an incision will be made in the gum over the wisdom tooth to allow for removal. If the roots have grown into the back of the jaw bone, some of the bone may need to be removed to lift the wisdom teeth out.

What can you expect during recovery from wisdom tooth surgery?

1. Feelings of exhaustion. Plan to rest for a few days.
2. Jaw pain. Level varies and dentist will prescribe medicine.
3. Swelling in the surgical area and difficulty opening jaw.
4. Strict diet of soft foods for first week.
5. A care sheet from your dentist explaining how to cleanse
the site of your wisdom tooth surgery.

There are also possible complications to watch out for after wisdom tooth surgery. High fever is a sure sign of an infection. Notify your dentist right away. Antibiotics are often routinely prescribed after wisdom tooth surgery.

Another complication known as dry socket may develop 3-4 days after the wisdom tooth surgery. It occurs when the blood clot at the site of the wisdom tooth surgery is dislodged. The clot is necessary for healing and becomes the foundation for the new growth of gum needed to cover the bone.

Dry socket leaves the bone exposed to the air, allowing food and liquid to collect in the site of the wisdom tooth surgery and cause infection. Dry socket symptoms include severe pain that radiates from the jaw to the ear.

Wisdom tooth surgery is nothing to take lightly and you should follow your dentist's instruction to the letter. If you notice any signs of complication or infection after your wisdom tooth surgery, notify your dentist immediately.

However, many people come through wisdom tooth surgery with only the minor discomforts normally expected. Keep the surgical site clean, stick to soft foods and you'll be your old self in no time.
