Rigid Insulation
Often used to supplement the insulation in walls and ceilings, rigid insulation is available in a variety of thickness and sizes and is made from various materials. This kind of insulation stops the conduction of heat into the house and is quite often used on the exterior of the house as a barrier to cold winds. Being waterproof, rigid insulation is used in combination with other home insulation materials to make the home a comfortable place for living. Utility bills can also be brought under control with the right installation and use of insulation in a house.
What is rigid insulation? Rigid insulation is a popular form of home insulation. Urethane is a chemical used in rigid insulation materials. It is also known by the name of polyurethane. Styrofoam is another kind of rigid insulation as also is Polystyrene. These different chemicals have more or less similar properties and are equally good for insulation projects. However, insulation contractors advise the use of rigid insulation in combination with other forms of insulation materials for residential projects. When supplemented with other materials, a durable, cost-effective and efficient insulation system can be created in any home or office. Benefits of using rigid insulation Rigid foam insulation is waterproof and has high thermal insulation powers. Besides these, the material itself is a polymer or made of molecules of chemical insulation materials which have been heated together. These molecules enclose many closed air spaces within them and make the insulation of superior quality. Certain kind of insulation material such as Styrofoam, which has greater strength, is used underground or under a concrete floor. However, this kind of insulation is best used with other forms of insulation. Disadvantages of using rigid foam insulation Although rigid foam insulation is beneficial in many ways, it has one major disadvantage. This insulation material is prone to insect infestation. Termites and carpenter ants are often found attacking the rigid foam to get to the wooden surface beneath. Pest control contractors find it difficult to deal with deep-boring termites that attack such insulation. Besides this, rigid foam insulation is often found to cost more than fiberglass or cellulose insulation.
