Polyurethane Foam Insulation

Urethane or polyurethane as it is popularly known is a very good insulation material. It has high resistance to heat flow and is comparatively more waterproof than any other insulation material. Used as both spray insulation and in sheet form, polyurethane is popular for insulation of wall cavities, gaps and cracks and is readily available at most home improvement supply stores.

Features of Polyurethane foam insulation

Polyurethane is formed when simple organic chemicals such as isocyanate and polyether are combined. The result is a polymer like substance to which a catalyst may be added and polyurethane is formed under pressure in a foam condition. It is highly fire-resistant and expands on curing. Used for small home insulation projects, polyurethane foam insulation is the best form of insulation available with most insulation material suppliers at very reasonable prices. Its easy to use structure makes it possible for any homeowner or handyman to use it without any mishaps.

How is spray insulation used?

Spray insulation involves the use of polyurethane foam in the form of sprays in the wall cavity of a finished or an unfinished wall of the house to provide insulation. This takes away the need to tear the walls apart for insulation purposes. Smaller gaps and cracks or holes can also be filled easily using spray insulation. Spray insulation is also known to build resistance to air infiltration because of its property of expansion on curing. Most kinds of chemicals used in spray insulation are also fire-proof. The insulation contractor would generally use special equipment to mix certain chemicals in particular ratios and spray or inject them into the wall cavities.

Disadvantages of using spray insulation

Although polyurethane foam spray insulation has high fire-resistant properties, the walls that may get damaged due to the spraying action can result in cracks which could in turn lead to moisture build up and vapor condensation. Also, over a period of time, spray foam insulation is known to lose the trapped gases within the foam and result in reduction of insulation efficiency. An insulation contractor would be the best solution provider in such cases.
